What I Wish I Knew as a Parent of a New Recruit…

“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.” – John Wooden

I was at my son’s Middle School Orientation tonight, and the school principal put a very thought-provoking list on the big screen in the auditorium for all of us parents with kids transitioning from elementary school to middle school to read.

As I read the list, all I could think about was how I could give this same list to every parent with a child getting ready to leave high school to go to college. It is quite a powerful reminder to all of us parents how important it is for our children to be allowed to fail in order to grow. I thought it was a great thing for all parents to read and begin figuring out if they are okay with accepting all the things on this list.

What I wish I knew (about my child) as a new middle school (first time college) parent…

  1. They really will make it.
  2. They can be trusted with a lot.
  3. They want to try it on their own.
  4. They want to know it’s ok to struggle.
  5. It can be the safest place to struggle. [Better in college than the real world, right?]
  6. They want responsibility.
  7. They want to be empowered.
  8. The best thing I can do for my child is to let them struggle to become a butterfly.

Pretty great stuff…in my opinion!
