“There is no greater delight than to be conscious of sincerity on self-examination.” Mencius
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past year in sports and the lessons it has brought. This year has been marked by uncertainty, yet I remain optimistic about the future. I believe genuine, authentic leadership will emerge to inspire hope and offer meaningful strategies moving forward.
Here are some of my key takeaways:
1. The Landscape of College Recruiting Has Transformed
The traditional college recruiting model that has shaped the past three decades no longer exists.
2. Uncertainty Among College Coaches
Coaches are navigating the same uncertainty as everyone else regarding roster sizes, scholarships, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness), National Letters of Intent (NLI), and the NCAA transfer portal.
3. Coaching in This Era Requires More Than Just Knowledge
Today’s coaching environment demands a unique combination of energy, passion, patience, resilience, thoughtfulness, and an understanding of both child and adult psychology.
4. Amazing and Inspiring Coaches Exist at Every Level
There are exceptional college coaches across all divisions who embody this diverse skill set. I’ve learned so much through our podcast conversations.
5. Shifting Priorities Among Recruits
Despite their passion for sports, recruits often have other competing priorities. As much as they love their sport, external influences constantly vie for their attention.
6. Embracing Social Media as a Tool
Social media is a permanent fixture in our lives. Rather than resisting it, parents and coaches must guide young athletes on responsible usage, recognizing red flags, and managing their screen time.
7. The Soaring Cost of Higher Education
College tuition continues to rise at unsustainable rates, driving many families to reconsider the value of traditional higher education.
8. College Tuition Costs Are Hitting Unstainable Levels
I am convinced that a bold group of visionary college presidents will eventually disrupt this trend by significantly lowering tuition. This shift could fill dorms, generate more revenue, and reshape higher education for the better. (I’d love to share some ideas!)
9. Valuing Coaches Who Believe in You
Recruits should never take for granted a coach who believes in them. Opportunities to earn a degree and compete immediately are invaluable and should never be taken lightly. “Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated.”
10. Family Time Over Holidays
As I grow older, I find myself placing less emphasis on holiday traditions and more value on quality time with my family.
11. Overlooked High School Athletes
Many talented high school athletes are not receiving the attention they deserve due to the transfer portal.
12. Lowering Expectations for Student-Athletes
We have softened our expectations for student-athletes. In many cases, resilience and toughness are diminishing because we hesitate to challenge and push them.
13. Investing in Coaching Development
It is essential to prioritize the development of coaches at all levels. Better coaching leads to stronger, more prepared athletes. We must make an all-out effort for Athletics leaders to coach their coaches.
14. Rediscovering the Golden Rule
We must not forget the importance of treating others as we wish to be treated. This simple principle remains vital in all areas of life, including sports.
15. The NBA’s Growing Pains
Watching the NBA continues to frustrate me.
16. The Challenge of Being a Chicago Sports Fan
Loyalty to Chicago sports teams is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Aargghh!
17. A Shift in My Coaching Focus
While I still love coaching on the court and field, I have found immense satisfaction in guiding teenagers through the college recruiting process and mentoring fellow coaches on building healthy, significant programs.
18. Confidence in the Next Generation
I remain hopeful and inspired by young people. I believe this generation of teenagers holds immense potential, and I sense that they will rise to advocate for the integrity of sports and the world they envision.
I would love to hear your thoughts and any insights you feel I may have missed. Wishing you a Happy New Year, and I look forward to continuing to contribute positively to the future!
