Why Can’t You Love Me the Way I Am?

Why Can’t You Love Me the Way I Am?

“The big challenge is to become all that you have the possibility of becoming.” – Jim Rohn

Let’s start with a hard truth.

Finding the right college coach isn’t like searching for your soulmate.

In life, when you find your person, you want them to see you, accept you, and love you for who you are — flaws and all. You don’t want someone who only loves you if you change into the person they wish you were. That’s where many relationships fail. Instead of recognizing the mismatch and moving on, one or both people try to “fix” the other.

College athletics is different.

When you choose a coach, you don’t want someone who simply accepts you as you are.

You want a coach who sees your flaws — and believes you can overcome them.

You want someone who has a vision for your development.
Someone who will challenge you.
Push you.
Hold you accountable.
And expect more from you than you expect from yourself.

From the coach’s perspective, they’re looking for athletes who have tools and potential — but who are open to coaching, open to growth, and willing to be developed into the best version of themselves.

If you’re looking for a coach who sees you as perfect in every way, you’re setting both of you up for disappointment.

Because the truth is this:

You are not perfect.
And neither is anyone else stepping into college athletics.

The next level is harder than you think.

You will struggle.
You will fail.
You may not start right away.
You may sit and watch others play for a season — or longer.
You may be asked to play a different role than you expected.
You may be challenged about your effort, your strength, your consistency, your conditioning, your IQ, or your focus.

And yes… sometimes you may get yelled at.

Perfect is unattainable.

But potential?
That’s very attainable.

And that’s what your coach saw in you.

The real question is this:

Are you willing to be coached?

Are you willing to change?
Are you willing to be uncomfortable?
Are you willing to be patient while your coach’s vision takes shape through your work, your resilience, and your growth?

Because here’s what often happens.

The coach who pushes you every day…
The coach who challenges you…
The coach who refuses to let you stay where you are…

That may be the coach who helps you become the person you never knew you could be.

That might be your dream coach.

Most athletes don’t look back and say,
“I’m grateful my coach accepted me as I was.”

They say,
“I’m grateful my coach didn’t let me stay there.”

Because the best coaches don’t just believe in who you are.

They believe in who you’re becoming.

And if you’re willing to trust that process, you may one day be thankful that your coach didn’t just love you as you were — but stayed committed to you as you grew, matured, and discovered what you were truly capable of becoming.
