Start with the Mirror

“Everything negative – pressure, challenges – are all an opportunity for me to rise.” –Kobe Bryant

In the world of college athletics recruiting, it’s easy for athletes and parents to point fingers—at coaches, politics, teammates, or the system itself. While some of these concerns may be valid, the most effective way to navigate the recruiting process starts with self-reflection.

Control What You Can Control

Instead of focusing on external factors, take a step back and ask yourself:

  • Am I truly maximizing my effort in training, practice, and competition?
  • Have I built strong, positive relationships with my coaches and teammates?
  • Am I advocating for myself and taking ownership of my recruiting process?

Successful athletes approach challenges with a growth mindset, understanding that their work ethic, attitude, and relationships play a critical role in their journey.

Be a Great Teammate and Leader

College coaches are not just evaluating stats and skill—they’re looking for athletes who elevate those around them. Demonstrating leadership, resilience, and teamwork can separate you from the competition. Supporting teammates, respecting coaches, and maintaining a positive attitude, even in difficult situations, will make you a more attractive recruit.

Exhaust Your Own Efforts Before Placing Blame

Before getting frustrated with the process, ask yourself: Have I done everything I possibly can to put myself in the best position? Have I reached out to coaches, created a strong highlight reel, attended camps, or improved my academic standing?

The recruiting journey isn’t always fair, but those who focus on what they can control and commit to continuous improvement will put themselves in the best position for success.

Start with the mirror. The results will follow.
